Historical Demography at EPC 2026 in Bologna: Two Sessions on New Data, Methods and Comparative Perspectives

The Società Italiana di Demografia Storica highlights the presence of two sessions dedicated to historical demography at the European Population Conference 2026 (EPC 2026), organised by the European Association for Population Studies and hosted by the Università di Bologna from 3 to 6 June 2026.

The first session, “Mortality, Inequality and Population Dynamics in Historical Perspective”, will take place on Thursday, 4 June 2026, from 11:00 to 12:30 in Room M, chaired by F. Scalone (University of Bologna).

The session brings together contributions on lifespan inequalities, seasonal mortality, demographic crises, migrant mortality, and the integration of traditional demographic approaches with new evidence from historical genetics. Presentations will be given by I. Barbiera, G. Dalla-Zuanna, M. Berner, Z. Hofmanová, D. Pany-Kucera, W. Pohl, B. Tobias and K. Wang; M. Castillo and M. Dribe; H. Jaadla and R. Davenport; M. Oris, S. Mazzoni, A. Garcia, M. Bourguignon and D. Ramiro; S. Vigezzi.

The second session, “Flash Session: New Data, Methods and Comparative Perspectives in Historical Demography”, will be held on Friday, 5 June 2026, from 16:00 to 17:30 in Room H, chaired by S. Minardi (University of Bologna).

The flash session will present research focused on new sources, digital methodologies, and comparative perspectives in historical demography, with contributions by J. Bourdieu, Y. Dupraz, C. Kermorvant and L. Kesztenbaum; M. Bourguignon, M. Oris, S. Mazzoni, D. Ordanovich and D. Ramiro; G. Broström and T. Bengtsson; A. Colasurdo; I. Gil Torras and J.-M. Pujadas Mora; M. Raftakis, R. Omenti and N. Barban; C. Rahal, N. Muggleton, A. Reeves, P. Moore, L. Li and A. Rottenkolber.

The EPC is the leading European conference in population studies and represents an important opportunity for discussion and exchange for the historical demography community.
