Population and History

Journal of the Italian Society of Historical Demography (SIDeS)

«Population and history» publishes articles concerning the history of the population in its dynamic and structural aspects. The journal promotes historical and demographic research relating to the evolutionary mechanisms of past populations by analyzing both aggregate and individual data. The themes embrace reproductive behaviour, family structures and the processes of formation of couples, the survival regime and the state of health of the populations, and the phenomenon of mobility on the territory. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, further fields of investigation include forms of care and assistance in past societies, epidemics and the spread of diseases, economic and social aspects concerning demographic behaviours, quantitative methods of historical demography, the history of thought demographic, the discovery and critical re-examination of sources. The journal does not want to limit its research field to Italian history alone but also to open up to other countries. In these terms, the magazine publishes open access articles in Italian and English.

Bollettino di Demografia Storica

From 1984 to 1999, SIDeS published 31 printed issues of the Bollettino di Demografia Storica. The journal disseminated the results of research relating to demographic history in the medieval, modern and contemporary ages, proposing contributions regarding the critical examination of sources and the application of new quantitative methods. The themes of the published articles embraced more typical demographic topics, such as those relating to the discussion of archival sources, demographic structures and the territorial distribution of the population, demographic evolution, fertility, reproductive behaviour, marriage and mortality. Other studies included interdisciplinary issues, such as migration, epidemics, abandoned childhood, families, minorities, relationships between demographic variables and other socioeconomic factors.
