The digitized burial permits.
Historical Archive, Iglesias. Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 6:00 PM

The issuance of burial permits by the Civil Registrar, based on the death certificate, gradually spread across Italy, drawing inspiration mainly from the Napoleonic Code. It was introduced both as a public health measure and to prevent premature burials. This practice became established in varying ways across the different pre-unification territories. Today, these documents—often lost or difficult to locate—are virtually the only available source for the historical analysis of causes of death at the individual level.

This event presents a collaborative initiative launched by a research group made up of members of SIDeS from the University of Sassari (Lucia Pozzi, Gabriele Ruiu) and the University of Bologna (Michail Raftakis), in cooperation with the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Iglesias. The project aims to digitize burial permits and promote joint scientific initiatives.

Participants in the event include:

  • The University of Sassari – DiSEA (Lucia Pozzi, Gabriele Ruiu, Michail Raftakis)

  • The Archival Superintendency of Sardinia

  • The Municipality of Iglesias and its Historical Municipal Archive

  • Microsystem S.r.l., the company that carried out the digitization.
