Study Day on “Water, Climate, and Populations”: New Themes in Historical and Environmental Demography
On December 20, 2024, a study day titled “Water, Climate, and Populations: New Themes in Historical and Environmental Demography” will take place at Aula Prodi, University of Bologna. The event, sponsored by the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Bologna and SIDeS – Italian Society of Historical Demography, will bring together experts to explore the influence of water resources and climate change on populations throughout history.
The day’s program will include a keynote address by Lorenzo Del Panta (University of Bologna), who will present “Climate and Diseases in History”. This will be followed by sessions on key topics, including the analysis of demographic dynamics and water systems in modern and contemporary times. Additionally, the relationship between climate and fertility will be discussed, with research on how temperature influences conception seasonality. The day will also provide space for exploring new data and historical sources, with presentations on projects like the Napoleonic Civil State Database in Friuli and the “Memory and Climate Resilience in Emilia-Romagna” project.
This event offers a significant opportunity for scholars of historical demography and the environment to gain deeper insights and resources for their research.
