From June 3 to 6, 2025, the International Conference “Epidemics: Contacts and Contagions, Reactions and Emotions” will be held in Naples, at the Polo Umanistico CNR.
The Conference is organized by CNR-ISEM within the framework of the PRIN PNRR “Institutional controls and health actions to control endemic and epidemic morbidity in Italian states between the 15th century and national Unity”, and with the collaboration of the INED’s network IN-HOPPE (International Network–Historical and Osteoarchaeological Past Populations Exploration).
The conference, adopting a diachronic and interdisciplinary perspective, brings together research contributions on epidemics in the modern age within the fields of social history, medicine, mentalities, and emotions. In particular, it will explore and discuss how the idea of contact and contagion has influenced reactions in political, administrative, and medical-scientific contexts, as well as the emotions triggered by the perception of a possible contagion among the population, various social actors, physicians, and rulers.
The event will take place exclusively in person, at the Polo Umanistico CNR, located at Via Cardinale Guglielmo Sanfelice No. 8, Naples.
